Garland

popcorn, popcorn, cranberry, popcorn, popcorn, cranberry, popcorn, popcorn, cranberry

This evening we decorated our Christmas tree. As I was putting the lights on the tree two of my daughters emptied the the stockings that were filled with our ornaments. They both started playing with the ornaments acting out each character. I was reminded of my childhood when we would play with ornaments as my mom put the lights on the tree. We would then help her decorate the tree which always ended up with thick patches of ornaments, mostly toward the bottom. The next morning when we woke up the ornaments were magically spread evenly throughout the tree!

I am going to keep a few of the ornament clusters in place on our tree. Once I put the popcorn and cranberry garland on it should even out the uneven distribution of ornaments. We made the garland this afternoon. I threaded red embroidery floss with an embroidery needle for each child. Pushing the needle through the popcorn was not as difficult for them as I had expected. Both girls accidentally poked their finger a few times but there were no tears. Next time I will have thimbles for them to use. My oldest daughter, age 5, was able to string the popcorn and cranberries quickly and created a pattern; popcorn, popcorn, cranberry, popcorn popcorn, cranberry.... The 3 year old started stringing a popcorn then a cranberry, every other one. After three pieces of popcorn she started eating the popcorn and just threading the cranberries! Her string is so cute, my oldest daughter told us she thought her sister's was the best and we should put it on the front of the tree! We had so much fun with the easy project I am inspired to try to make more ornaments with the girls.

Magic Christmas Tree

Now that was have passed Thanksgiving it is time to get out our Christmas decorations. Aunt Karen gave the girls a magic Christmas tree again this year. We wasted no time putting together and growing our magic Christmas tree. It was simple to assemble and we watched the tree grow for the next 6 hours before we decorated it. The girls were so excited each time they checked on the tree. If you sit and watch the tree long enough you can actually see the crystals growing! I'm not sure what makes the crystals grow on the tree, but I'm sure that no one touches it!

Centerpieces

Growing up I spent every holiday sharing the piano bench at the end of the table with my sister. Within five minutes of eating the centerpiece would be moved from the table to avoid knocking heads as everyone leaned over to have a conversation.

My mother has a knack for decorating although sometimes her horror vacui takes over causing her to create rather large centerpieces. In the recent years she has honed her centerpiece creation skills. I don't remember the last holiday a centerpiece was removed from the table.

This past Thanksgiving we had dinner with close friends. As we walked in the door the centerpiece (and table setting) caught my eye. The centerpiece was the perfect size, height and combination of unique plants. China berries, ornamental kale and artichokes! It was beautiful and so original. I love everything about the table settings (including the handmade table). It is obvious my friend and her husband are both very talented artists.

Dairy Free Banana Bread

Persimmons, pears and apples are in season and eaten daily in our house. They practically vanish as soon as we bring them home. Since we have been bringing home these fall treats the consumption of bananas has diminished. We had so many brown bananas the other day I decided to make banana bread. With a quick internet search for "diary free banana bread" I stumbled upon this recipe. It is always risky to try a recipe from a source I have never used but it turned out to be moist, and fluffy. We had to cook the banana bread about three times as long as the recipe stated. I was also happy to see the blog is devoted to dairy free recipes!

Nonchalant Mom Post

Nonchalantmom.com is a wonderful online boutique that mostly carries children's clothing and now has woman's clothing too. The store always features a unique selection of clothing and gifts. I recently wrote for Nonchalant Mom's blog about food elimination while breast feeding. Carina, the owner of Nonchalant Mom, (who truly is a nonchalant mom) has a wonderful blog. I love reading her blog because I always know I will get useful information about parenting without her telling me what to do. She does not limit her blog to information for parents but also writes about designers, artists and information for healthy living. I appreciate her approach to parenting and life. Reading her blog reminds me to be a "Nonchalant Mom" myself!
